Stefan Panaretov's Memoirs of the Uprising of April

Summary/Abstract: Tens and thousands, of memoirs of the participants and witnesses of the Uprising of April have been published over the past 130 years since that singular event. However, in public and private archives, there are as-yet-unpublished memoir sources of that important period in our national history; such are the brief notes of Stefan Panaretov who was a renowned educational and social figure at the time before and after our National Liberation, which were entitled “Memoirs of the Uprising of April”. The person of Stefan Panaretov and his involvement in the events of which he gives an account necessitate the publication of these memoir sources in their unabridged form so that they become available to specialists and the wider reading public. They provide an interesting account and are a valuable soxirce of the important moments in our historical past, In addition, their author was a knowledgeable and highly educated person who was well aware of the significance of that kind of material and of the authenticity of the facts which he recounted in his memoirs. The current publication is being carried out in accordance with the copy in the Scientific Archive of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences; the corrections that have been made concern spelling only. The names of people, newspapers, etc. are rendered with the spelling with which they occur in the typewritten copy, although it may differ from modern accepted spelling.
