Summary/Abstract: By referring to the documentary publications of Academician Ivan Shishmanov and Academician Petar Diknekov both of whom published decades ago a substantial part of the correspondence between the renowned Bulgarian scholar of history Professor Marin Drinov and the eminent educationalist, man of letters and folklorist Kuzman Shapkarev (1834–1909), the author aims to make an overview of the relations between the two notable patriots. The article examines the major questions put forward in the letters they exchanged. Their correspondence reveals their broad scholarly and social interests, their involvement and willingness to address the problems of their compatriots. The exchange of letters between Professor M. Drinov and K. Shapkarev suggests that they became close associates and shared the same views in their efforts to reveal the truth about the past and the present of the Bulgarians in Macedonia and to put forward arguments in its support from history, folklore and ethnography, to struggle against falsifications and to contribute in every way to the preservation and strengthening of the Bulgarian national spirit in Macedonia.
