Summary/Abstract: County, the Iaşi-Chişinău line, prisoners of war (PoW), prison camp, Ural Mountains. Neculai Caba, who was originally from Teioasa but spent his childhood in Bajura (from an administrative point of view, both villages belong to the town of Darabani), has written his memoir after 1990, in which he describes his life course from childhood until the moment he comes back from captivity in Russia. The author makes a thorough description of the Romanian inter-war village, whose life was full of customs and forms of worship. In addition, he remarks the limits of the educational system in the rural area as well as the socio-economic facts of the area under discussion. Caba provides precious information regarding the clothing and food of the inter-war villager from the north of Moldavia. The story follows on with the scene describing his conscription in 1943, his training for war and leaving to the line at the Dniester River in the spring of 1944. As a witness of the city of Iaşi being occupied by the Soviet troupes on the 20th of August, 1944, Neculai Caba presents important details about this specific episode. His way to the concentration camp and the shocking life as prisoner of war (a life marked by famine and mass graves) bring additional historical importance to his memoir.
