Summary/Abstract: The article presents data about the history and genealogy of the Malaxa family, which was very famous in Romania during the Interwar Period, mainly because of the great industrialist Nicolae Malaxa (1884-1965). His great-grandfather Mihalache Malaxa came from the Island of Kerkyra to Moldavia at the end of the XVIIIth century. His descendants lived in Galaţi and in Tecuci, buying lands and making carriers in the admi-nistration of the Covurlui and of the Tecuci districts. The sons of Mihalache Malaxa and of his wife Andreiana Voinescu, descendant of some Moldavian boyar families, received boyar titles and were part of the Moldavian nobility. In the next generation some members of the Malaxa family became officers in the Romanian army. Nicolae Malaxa’s daughter, Irina, was married with doctor George Emil Palade who received the Nobel price in 1974, as an American professor. He has been until now the only ethnical Romanian who has been granted the prestigious Swedish price.
