Summary/Abstract: The centenary of the beginning of the First World War marked a renewed collective (not only academic) interest in this topic. This fact was demonstrate by the proliferation of historical texts on the subject, but also by the proliferation of media products, the difference being that the historiography (i.e. the product of the work of historians) is never neutral either by the selection of topics, either by omissions or reinterpretation. In German historiography, the theme of the First World War has always played a central role as an “articulator” element of its contemporary history, which has been alternately treated as an expression of continuity or rupture. But this historiography has undergone great changes over time both by historical and contextual reasons as by the influence of changes in major trends of historiographical production. This article discusses the relationship between history and interpretations of history in the case of the contemporary history of Germany.
