Summary/Abstract: Marco Ambrosi lives in Verona. He often meets with the immigrants from Africa, who live and work in Italy. He photographed his visitors in an antique armchair. Men, women and children from Africa were shown sitting in a stylish setting, and dressed as if for a very special occasion. The armchair is the only prop, which suggests different, non-African location. The artist used it as a symbol and an unifying element for the series. Children look most interested in the artistic process: they look straight into camera’s lens. The sitters aren’t shown as representative of an ethnic group. The artist studied their faces in order to reveal their character. His portraits are simple and subtle studies. He ignored sociological and political context. His pictures are filled with intensive light and soft shadows. They resemble paintings by Caravagio, the master of chiaroscuro effects.
