Summary/Abstract: Transplantology develops in the abundant space of collective images. The perception of human body, and the views regarding its ownership, inform the society’s attitude to transplantation procedures. The European culture has been predominated for centuries by the belief that the individual is not the owner but the user of his/her physicality. Furthermore, the view that the rights associated with the body are in principle permanent has become a norm. In future, on account of the rapid progress in biotechnology, such views may be subject to revision. As Francis Fukuyama observed, human beings are becoming a species able to design and manufacture itself. If this is so, the currently prevailing conviction that the human status is a given entity in need of protection, quite possibly will fade or vanish altogether.
