Summary/Abstract: In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, successive and sometimes parallel models embodying the creation of theatrical reality existed in Vilnius' theatrical culture: "theatre-world", "theatre-school", "theatre-life", "theatre-shrine". The significance of the artist in these models was not the same. Operas based on the stylistics of the late baroque period expressed luxurious visualism and illusion. During the first decades of the 19th century, theatre artists strived to reflect the epoch being portrayed by relying on historical and ethnographic facts. In the mid-19th century naturalistic theatre creation tendencies formed. In the end on the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries the objective became to free theatre from its social functions (informative, educational) and to treat it as an independent art shrine. In the developmental context of this theatrical view created with the artist's help, creations by Konstanty Otoselski, Antoni Smuglewicz, Jan Rustem, Jozef Hilary Glowacki, Vincenty Dmochowski, Albert Žamet, Ferdinand Ruszczyc, Mikalojaus Konstantinas Čiurlionis are reviewed. Attention is drawn to the fact that most artists not only created theatre decorations, but also initiated various theatre events which noticeably enriched Vilnius' cultural life of that period.
