Formation of new dialect in Aukštaitian part of Klaipėda region

Summary/Abstract: This paper analyses current dialect situation in Aukštaitian part of former region of Klaipėda (Aukštaitians of Klaipėda region). The research was done using data from expeditions of 2003-2005 year. The paper mainly focuses on features of phonetics; a lot of attention is paid to some of more specific morphology and syntax characteristics. The analysis of dialect notes reveals that traditional dialect of west Aukštaitians of Klaipėda region has irreversibly changed. Because of migration processes in this territory new dialectal mine has formed which is mutating till now. The newly formed dialect cannot be assigned to any of existing Lithuanian dialects, west Aukštaitians and Žemaitians dialect features compete there and the influence of German language is still noticeable. The territory of Aukštaitians of former Klaipėda region is not monolithic from dialect viewpoint – the east part is more characterised by Kaunian features of west Aukštaitians, west part is dominated by Žemaitian specialty. However there are some of phonetical, morphological and syntax features which join together all of former Klaipėda region Aukštaitian area.
