An attempt of comparison of order batching with independent order-picking

Summary/Abstract: The paper describes the advantages and disadvantages of independent order-picking and order batching. The effectiveness of each approach was compared using simulations and analytical approach. Two criteria of order batching was considered: the proximity of pick locations and time windows. The studies indicate that order batching significantly reduces order-picking time, but the optimization of this process often doubles these benefits. The paper proposes that the sorting time should be associated with the time needed by the picker for crossing the picking aisle.
