Summary/Abstract: The researcher of History Mihnea Berindei died on 19 June 2016 in Venice, the city where he studied Ottoman archives for decades and where he had chosen to live his last years. Since 1970, when he left Romania with a research grant, till the early 2010, he lived in Paris. After the revolution, he came back into the country for long periods. He was summoned by his activities such as civic and political or development of important works: Final Report of the Presidential Commission for the Analysis of the Communist Dictatorship in Romania, collections of documents from the archives of the Central Committee of the Communist Party, volumes of letters in the 1980s radio station "Free Europe". Mihnea Berindei dedicated his life to recognize, respect and promote human rights. As in everything he did, he added to adherence of principles and values an extraordinary human presence. Dignity and freedom were so intimately linked to his existence that, in the most complicated situations, he has not lost the discernment to distinguish good from evil. His disappearance is a great loss for all those who see human rights still a landmark for the future of Romanian civilization.
