Summary/Abstract: The article concerns Polish linguistics taking into consideration the division into: evolutional and diachronic linguistics (which examines old Polish) and descriptive and synchronic linguistics (which examines contemporary Polish). In the period discussed, three research paradigms were evident: structural, cognitive and pragmalinguistic. In the field of diachronic linguistics there was an intense development of morphology, lexicology and lexicography and the importance of language history as a scientific study grew significantly. In the area of synchronic linguistics there appeared new disciplines: ethnolinguistics, pragmalinguistics and there was a rapid development of: lexicography, semantics, dialectology, foreign language pedagogy. There appeared first synthetic descriptions of Polish language outside the country and the theory of axiological linguistics was developed. The development of Polish linguistics in the past twenty years was extensive and dynamic.
