Summary/Abstract: The subject of analysis is the „near” and „far” contexts of origin and development of the Russian book for popular reading of the XIXth century, which was an important channel of familiarizing the reader-commoner to the world of science and culture. Close attention is paid to little-studied works of the author of mass orientation, at one time a popular Russian novelist Vladimir Burnashev.
