Summary/Abstract: The present article represents a formalistic approach to literature. This school of literary criticism mainly focusses on the significance of the art form, using an internal analysis of the work. Despite this, here we try to show that the main formalistic scholars, Viktor Shklovsky and Boris Eichenbaum, were, in some respect, open to the concept of meaning. The aim of this study is to explore their formalistic theory of prose fiction. Whereas V. Shklovsky separated the plot into its individual components and showed their connections, Eichenabum´s concern was different. He emphasised unity within the prose fiction, exploring the spoken word as a method of communication. He also helped instigate the concept of narrator.
