Vladislav Chodasevič – Poet of the Duality (on his poetry and its translation by Petr Borkovec)

Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the work of the Russian poet, V. Chodasevič (1886-1939), and is divided into two closely related parts. The first part deals with his attitude to Puškin and describes how content and sound components are well balanced in his poetry. The analysis points out the feeling of the imperfection of the world and the principle of duality as the two leading concerns of Chodasevič’s poetry. The second part examines Petr Borkovec’s translation of Chodasevič’s poems into Czech. It focuses particularly on the verses, which Borkovec translated in several versions. The article comes to the conclusion that the translations reflect various possible interpretations of the original text. The individual translations then differ as to whether they put an emphasis on the meaning, or on the sound aspect of the poems.
