Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the problem of social cooperatives development in Poland as entities having increadibly high potential in supporting people to overcome barrieres and weaknesses excluding them from labour market. Such initiatives on one hand operate as typical commercial enterprises, aiming at applying the rules of economic calculation in everyday activities they undertake. On the other hand however, their objectives are placed far beyond the market, because they primarily concentrate on solving problems of social exclusion in various aspects. Although the group of entities comprising social economy sector is heterogeneous, social cooperatives are considered ones perfectly fulfilling the criteria established for social enterprises. The author also attempts to analyse the law regulations, the meaning of social cooperatives for economic and social development and to identify the opportunities and threats hindering the development of social entrepreneurship in Poland.
