Summary/Abstract: The article looks into the unexplored problem of originating and development of the knowledge of people’s psychology. Its roots are found in the works of Herodotus, Hippocrates, Aristotle and other antique authors. The meaning of the views of Locke, Vico and other philosophers from the age of Rationalism is pointed out. As an immediate forerunner of people’s psychology is shown the enlightener Montesquieu. An accent is put on the foundation of the new science during the period of Romanticism by Humboldt, Steintal and Wundt. The schools of Durkheim, Le Bon and Tarde are also mentioned. The influence of Freud is underlined. The characteristics of the surveys during the Cold War and after its end are reviewed. In conclusion, the current concepts of people’s psychology as a complex science are presented
