Summary/Abstract: Nicolae Lungu remains one of the greatest composers of choral music from Romania, in the twentieth century. His work includes numerous pieces of choral work, religious and secular, which entered the repertoirs of the church choirs and of the professional ones. Follower of the composer D.G. Kiriac, Nicolae Lungu observed, like his master, that the romanian choral repertoire is pretty poor in autohtonous choral creations. That’s why he started to compose, from his youth, choral works based on folk music, which he interpreted with Romania Choir; at the same time, he composes religious choral works based on the traditional psaltic songs, which were sang at the lectern, and on his own works, in the psaltic style, interpreted by the Choir of Patriarchy. Through the appearance of The Psaltic Liturgy in 1957, with the support of Patriarch Justinian, Nicolae Lungu hands down to our Church the most important and representative liturgical choral work, in this manner contributing in a special way to the enrichment of the ecclesiastic romanian choral repertoire. Using the classical and modal harmony, as well as the moderated polyphony, the author of The Psaltic Liturgy, makes up a musical creation, which is accessible to every ecclesiastic choir. Since its apparition, The Psaltic Liturgy became the nominative liturgy in the Romanian Orthodox Church, at its base being the concept of the liturgic-musical uniformity defined by The Holy Synod of our Church. The Holy Synod saw, in the choral creations and in the songs which were sang at the lectern, the most important way of bracing christians’ unity.
