Summary/Abstract: A number of works written by Bronius Kutavičius under the influence of non-Lithuanian cultures are discussed. An opposition "native/foreign" or, in other words, "centre/periphery" provides here the context for discussion of these compositions. The mentioned descriptions provoke sundry questions concerning communication, spatial distribution, narrative, gnoseology, and ontology, which are brought into notice in the course of this article. In Kutavičius' music, the most characteristic features of treatment of the "foreign" elements may be exemplified in the following cases: a) when using the "foreign" elements, the composer renders them his own way and makes them fit his personal style; b) when using the "foreign" elements as actually "foreign", Kutavičius presents them in the manner of stylization; c) in Kutavicius' operas, the most prominent characters - Strazdas and Count Šemeta - are really "strangers" within their "own" communities, that is, outsiders, marginals; d) in some cases, Kutavičius employs the "foreign" elements as compositional means to emphasize what is intended to be the "centre".
