Summary/Abstract: The article describes the process of profound democratization, resulting in changing the notion of democracy which is no longer understood as a means of achieving certain values, but rather as a value in itself. Moreover, democratic values and procedures are becoming increasingly popular and as such, accepted by traditionally non-democratic institutions such as school, family and Church. The process is particularly noticeable in school and family. The article also analyses the most important implications (both positive and negative) of this phenomenon in education. For example, respecting pupils' personal autonomy is connected with weakening of hierarchy and authority. In general, problems created by democracy (e.g. various forms of populism) are more acute in upbringing and education than on the state level, because pupils are not as mature as adult citizens.
