Summary/Abstract: The article answers to the question if the modernization of neighborhood communities in Sofi¬a has happened through living in the architecture of modernism. It presents data and analysis of ¬field research in three prefabricated concrete complexes in Sofi¬a in order to explain a contemporary phenomenon of creative architectural voluntarism encoded in novel forms of art expression namely self-made by the inhabitants grape vine trellis, tables with benches, fences, flowerbeds. The paper states that the apartment buildings constructed during the Socialist era are traumatic architecturein official discourse and since trauma and identity are contradictory, the research explores the many unresolved issues in the residential urban environment which are deeply rooted in the socialist past.
