{Guy} problem. An attempt at diachronic and synchronic analysis of the lexeme {chłop}

Summary/Abstract: The paper analyzes the properties of the Polish lexeme {chłop}, as seen from both diachronic and synchronic perspective. In the first part the author makes use of Polish and Slavonic etymological dictionaries in order to outline various hypotheses concerning the origin of the word, and traces its semantic development in the Polish language on the basis of historical and contemporary dictionaries. The second part is devoted to the functioning of {chłop} in the contemporary Polish language. The treatment of the lexeme in contemporary lexicographic sources is commented on. Finally, the author distinguishes (on the basis of the lexeme’s syntactic properties) three homonymous units of language possessing the shape {chłop} and attempts to formulate a preliminary definitions thereof.
