Summary/Abstract: This paper treats the contribution of Ph.D. Adem Handzic to the studying issues of waqf institutions, its early history, the nature of development and the role that it had in the process of establishing and urban development of cities in the first centuries of Ottoman rule in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In this regard, the author has tried to give a clearer insigh, as much as possible, into the works of Adem Handzic who have fully or at least partially addressed the question of waqf institutions and its importance in the overall socio-economic transformation of Bosnian urban settlements and raising the level of their urbanity. The paper considers the scientific valorization, with special attention, of Handžić’s study that set the fundamental basis for the study of questions of origin and development of Tuzla and the settlements in its wider surroundings in the XVI century.
