Ownership and management of lakes and the problem of their sustainable use

Summary/Abstract: Applied in many cuntries integrated lake basin management model was presented. Lakes and their functions were presented with the view to other water resources. The uniqueness of lakes was underlined. Among sources of many lake problems the socioeconomic factors that contribute to the state and management of basins were recognised as critical. Public and private ownership of lakes was discussed, with indication to modern tendency to replace tradition forms of owneship by modern water rights. Key principles of integrated lake basin management that needs integration of institution, strategies and politics, lake stakeholders, technology, information and finance, were presented. Characteristic strategies and actions implemented under the integrated lake basin management in many countries in the world were presented and the possibility of implementation of the management model to sustainable use of Polish lakes was provisionally discussed.
