Summary/Abstract: The possibilities of local community participation in sustainable management of lakes was presented on the case of community of Łajs, a small village located between two lakes: Łajsk and Kośno (Purda Commune, Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship). Unarranged water and sewage management, includ-ing lack of sewage system and uncontrolled water consumption, caused water degradation of Łajsk Lake and the threat of the same in Kośno Lake. Alarmed citizens and sympathisers of the village established “Ecological Association Łajs 2000” in 2007. The principal aim of the association is prevention of the progressive lakes degradation. The association has been able to consolidate the most important regional and local institutions of public administration, as well as scientific and fishery ones around the program. Steps to arrange water and sewage management in lakes basin have been taken and receipted funding has allowed to move to the cultivation of Łajsk Lake. The program of lakes protection which is carried out is compatible with the world concept of integrated lakes management and it shows that even in law-administrative condition of dominant consulting function of society, the governance and coordination of administration to realize locally determined aims is possible.
