Summary/Abstract: The aim of the study was to determine the effect of protected areas on the level of socio-economic development achieved by the municipality. The study involved rural communes of the Warmia-Mazury. In order to determine the level of economic and social development of the analyzed municipalities, Z. Hellwig development pattern was used. On the basis of calculations, rankings of municipalities were prepared in three groups: the share of legally protected areas in the municipal area, the level of economic development and the level of social development. Finally, a conclusion can be formulated that the presence of protected areas in the area of a municipality does not affect its level of economic development, and in case of social development low positive correlation is visible − the higher the proportion of protected areas in the municipal area, the higher the level of social development of the local community.
