Summary/Abstract: The article presents and compares two books belonging to different, but in some key ways convergent fields of the humanities. The sociological work by Anna Wylegała entitled "Resettlement and Memory: A Study of Social (Non)memory Based on the Example of Ukrainian Galicia and Poland’s «Recovered Territories»” (2014) and the linguistic work by Anna Zielińska "Speech of the Borderland: A study of Languagesand Identities in the Lubuskie Region" (2013) both raise issues of importance from the point of view of culture at the turn of the century. These include migration, memory and identity. Both works are based on similar field studies in which respondents – the residents of the specified regions – shared their memories and knowledge of the past. In both Wylegała’s and Zielińska’s research, the conclusions reached are similar: the traditions of Central Europe (including of course Poland) are founded on multiculturalism, which today – in some sense derivatively – isbeing rediscovered.
