Summary/Abstract: The article presents a survey of recent research on the subject of bicycle riding and its consequences, as well as their role in shaping urban policies relating to bicycle traffic. Selected studies of individual and social benefits from bicycling are cited and discussed. Among geographic factors influencingbicycle traffic, the role of infrastructure is shown to be particularly important, as are citizens’ subjective responses to it. The symbolic and affective meaning of the bicycle is singled out among psychological and social factors; related social norms and the circumstances behind the transformation of transport habits are also discussed. The article highlights the potential for methods of social marketing to build the bicycle’s brand as an everyday means of transport and stir changes in urban residents’ locomotion habits. The article ends with a call for more in-depth research into local locomotion cultures and expansion of their role in shaping bicycle policy.
