Summary/Abstract: The considerations contained in this article focus on sustainable development in economic, social and ecological aspects as the leading challenge of the twenty-first century. It also describes the impact of consumers and consumption on achieving this development. The starting point is to present the triple system: society, economy and the environment, as a full field of action for sustainable development. The analysis of the leading problem – influence of consumption and consumers to head towards sustainable development – is illustrated on the example of the Polish economy and its development. Conclusions and suggestions regarding consumer, social and civic activities which are conducive to the pursuit of sustainable development and thus to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century are based on the results of empirical studies carried out in the research project “Consumption in the innovative economy”.
