Summary/Abstract: The works on infrastructure of the 4th Pan-European Corridor (A1 Deva – Orăştie highway), started also in Hunedoara County, in 2011, offered the opportunity to identify a large number of archaeological sites, some of them changing significantly the picture of the evolution of human communities, over time, in south-western Transylvania. In the West side of the A1 highway, near the villages Şoimuş and Bălata, two large and very complex sites, conventionally named Şoimuş 1 – Zona A, B and Şoimuş 2, were investigated. Features and archaeological materials were identified belonging to the Early Neolithic, more precisely to the Starčevo-Criş communities. In this study, we intend to present some issues regarding the Starčevo-Criş population habitat from Şoimuş, from the "contact area" between the southern part of the Apuseni Mountains and the northern of the Poiana Ruscă Mountains. In this first stage, our approach includes the presentation of the research stage and the toponymy, but also issues about the geography and the geology of the zone the latter ones conditioning the evolution of the prehistoric communities in the Deva – Şoimuş region.
