Summary/Abstract: An industry cluster is usually defined as a group of companies and other related economic actors and institutions that are able to generate certain competitive advantages as a result of their mutual contacts and relationship. Although the origin of this concept comes from the book of Alfred Marshall, Principles of Economics, from 1890, in the last several decades, there has been an explosion of interest for clusters by the researchers from various economic disciplines. One of the key challenges these researchers are faced with is how to systematically approach identification and analysis of clusters. Purpose of this paper is to offer review of various techniques and tools that the researchers developed for analysis of cluster and to indicate their respective advantages and disadvantages. The focus is on top-down techniques although references to some bottom-up approaches are offered.
