Summary/Abstract: The topic “Relations between literary scholarship and cultural studies” is at the first sight extremely broad and may elicit various expectations to do especially with the questions of the practical application of literary scholarship to the so-called cultural studies and viceversa. The following text focuses on the question of how this relationship affects literary theory, or theories, what it brings for literary scholars in general and what are its particular practical implications for literary interpretation. First of all, it must be emphasized that the author’s primary scholarly specialization is German and Dutch literary studies, which is why most examples are taken from German discussions on the subject, or those reflected in the German-speaking environment. Secondly, the thematic focus of the essay requires dealing with terminological definitions. The author attempts to answer the questions: What do we mean, when we speak of cultural studies? In the relationship of cultural studies and literary scholarship, what do we mean by literary scholarship? Likewise, we won’t be able to avoid the question what, in the context of current discussions, we mean by culture, and finally, how to understand literature in this context.
