Summary/Abstract: The following article shows the correspondences between Rilke’s opinions on the fine arts and the artistic convictions of three critical observers of modern art (Ladislav Hanus, Walter Benjamin and Hans Sedlmayr). In all three cases, these correspondences cannot be satisfactorily explained by historically reconstructed reception – but neither can they be considered a pure accident. They demonstrate two things: the immense influence of Rilke on the perception of modern art and the surprising connections between the anti-modernistic programs of the European intellectuals in the first half of the 20th century.
