Summary/Abstract: After the Peace of Adrianopolis (1829) and after the cancellation of the Turkish Rayahs from the left bank of the Danube (the Romanian bank), the first two Orthodox churches were consecrated in Brăila: the St. Archangels Mihail and Gavriil Church (1831) and St. Nicolae Church (1838). Our study will add some archive data to the already known information about the old church, with the patron St. Nicolae, from Brăila. In 1835, the foundation stone of the old church, having St. Nicolae as its patron, was laid; the church was completed and consecrated in 1838. Unfortunately, in 1859, this church was burned down. An inventory of the old church, St. Nicolae, from Brăila, for the period 1838-1856, adds some further information to the short history of the old church. The inventory was realized at the request of the “Department of Faith and Public Instruction of the Romanian Principality” and of the Bishop of Buzău, Filotie Parsoi, in February 1856. The inventory of the church assets was mandatory since one of the vestrymen of the church, George Papazovici, had resigned. The Bishop Filotei proposed Ioan Ceauşul for taking over the vacant seat and he was enthroned as a vestryman. The Inventory reveals that the assets of St. Nicolae Church, from Brăila, consisted of: 1.Liturgical objects made of silver, brass, copper, lead, nacre and cloth. 2.Icons. 3.Religious books. 4.Usual objects. 5.Houses and shops built in the streets, “painted in red and yellow”. After completing the inventory, the two vestrymen received the assets of St. Nicolae Church, signing along with the archpriest of Brăila.
