Summary/Abstract: During the first decades of the 19th century, Ghervasie Monah contributed very much to decorate not only the books printed in the Monastery of Neamţ, but also those published at Bucharest. In the books printed at Bucharest, Ghervasie signed the illustrations: Jesus High Bishop, The Descent of the Holy Spirit, The Incredulity of St Thomas, The Crossing of the Red Sea, The Virgin and Child, The Annunciation. Among these images a special position is taken by the very dynamic and imaginative illustration The Descent of the Holy Spirit (The Pentecost) which was boldly created. The composition is chiefly accomplished diagonally, the gestures and feelings deriving from the Baroque art. The interest shown by this master craftsman in scenes full of motion helps us assign to him further woodcuts existent in the writings of Bucharest, among which The Last Judgement is highly convincing.
