Summary/Abstract: Contemporary Russia (Russian Federation) is the main successor of the Soviet Union, which in 1991 has disintegrated and that until its disintegration was one of the two super powers. The disintegration of the USSR was associated with the searching by Russia its place in the world and in the international system, defining Russian interests, and with striving to save of status as a global power and player. The result of the creation of a new Russian collective identity is a huge popularity in Russia geopolitics, which in this country begins to act as a metaidea (the universal idea explaining the world) and, in a certain sense, fills the ideological void after the bankruptcy of communist ideology. The purpose of this article is the presentation of the genesis of Russian geopolitical thinking, which had been formed, in principle, since the establishment of the Russian Empire in the first half of the eighteenth century – through the nineteenth century – until the Soviet period. The article presents the main ideas, concepts and their creators – in the context of the international system. The construction of this article has a chronological problem character.
