Summary/Abstract: During the transition period, that is, at the time between the introduction by AlexanderWielopolski of the Public Education Act in the Kingdom of Poland on May 20, 1862 and the implementationof the Russian Education Act of 1871 in the Kingdom of Poland in 1873, there canbe distinguish two sub-periods in Polish language teaching in secondary schools: a) years of implementationof Wielopolski’s school reform (1862–1864), b) years of reorganization of schools1864–1872 (transitional period). This paper presents these teachers, who in the years 1864–1873were responsible for teaching Polish language in state schools. This group consisted of 84 people, including 48 teachers who were retained in schools after the Wielopolski’s reform, and who hadbegan their work during the interinsurrection years. The majority of said pedagogues primarilytaught classical languages, modern languages, geography and history of the Kingdom of Polandand the Russian Empire; thus, Polish language was just a supplementary subject. Moreover, thepaper discusses their education, territorial origin and denominational structure. Said group ofPolish language teachers has been presented on the background of organizational changes thatwere taking place in secondary education in the Kingdom of Poland after the fall of the JanuaryUprising.
