Summary/Abstract: The article deals with one of the most crucial principles of teaching, i.e.: learners active participation in the teaching process. It is widely known that effective learning process takes place under the condition that an individual actively participates in it. Only conscious engagement and the feeling of responsibility for one's own learning gives a chance for permanent acquisition of new knowledge and skills. Active participation depends to a great extent on learners themselves and is determined by such personal qualities as: an intellectual level, abilities, or personality. It may also depend on learners being prepared or unprapared for classes. Nonetheless, it is the academic teacher who is directly responsible for promoting and developing learners active participation. The author of the article tries to answer the following question: What can academic teachers do, how should they conduct classes in order not to let their students remain passive receivers of knowledge? She suggests the concept of Cooperative Learning (Brüning/Saum 2009) as a good example of involving all learners in the learning process and she illustrates this concept with the examples from the field of foreign language teaching.
