Summary/Abstract: Throughout human history teachers have been trying to find more and more effective ways of sharing their knowledge. The 20th century, especially its second half, witnessed rapid changes in teaching and development of new methodologies and approaches. One of them was called Problem-Based Learning. Like many others, it arose from the disappointment with old, traditional methods and the pursuit of more effective ways of teaching. Being very versatile, attempts have been made to adapt it to foreign language teaching. However, is this method really a remedy to all the problems that teachers have been facing for centuries? Can the traditional methods be rejected so easily? What are the advantages and drawbacks of both traditional language teaching methodologies and Problem-Based Learning? This paper discusses a selected number of traditional foreign language teaching methodologies and compares them with PBL.
