Summary/Abstract: The article presents the technique of a lexicographer who deals with Old Polish. Years of experience in coauthoring Słownik staropolski [Old Polish Dictionary] enables the authors to display methods of work with language material which are inaccessible to users of a historical dictionary. Dictionaries contain only finished language material and defi nition of meaning, while research methods leading to final conclusions remain invisible. The article uses the example of three Polish glossary entries (rostir, sloyerze, wynnye), erroneously read and so included in source publications, to show step by step how a dictionary entry is created, what challenges must be faced and how they can be resolved. The authors conclude by expressing a desire for closer cooperation of medieval scholars of various specialties to obtain a better, more exact knowledge of the roots of our national culture.
