Summary/Abstract: The remuneration of the schoolteachers was a persistent, unsettled problem for the greekcatholic ecclesiastic authorities at that time. The material situation of the teaching staff was precarious because of the small salary (paied by the confesional communities) and of the delays in its payment. The state began to show attention to this matter. By a series of laws (1893, 1907, 1913) it required the communities to provide a minimum salary to schoolteachers. The state also offered financial support to those comunnities that could not provide this salary. This aid was conditioned by some concessions: the state gave itself the right to interfere with didactic matters wich once concerned only the ecclesiastic authorities (the appointment of the schoolteacher, the syllabus). This stipulations deeply displeased the greek-catholic leaders, who considered it as an attempt to secularize the confesional education.
