Anti-Qasida in the Ottoman Literary Tradition: “Kasida razrušenoj kući” by Hasan Zijaija Mostarac

Summary/Abstract: The poethic opus of Hasan Ziyai Mostarac, the earliest bosnian divan poet, contains eleven poems, qasida, written in the Ottoman Turkish languae and all of them except one adhere to then dominant classic poetic form. The exception is „The Poem to the Old House“, which not only by its methrics but also by its content stands apart from the traditional Ottoman poetry, which used the qasidah form mostly as a panegyiric to potential mecena. Theoretically, such a choice made by Hasan Ziyai could be characterised as parody to the genre of qasida. Nevertheless, in the opinion of a contemporary literary theorist Gerad Gentee such an assumption could not be held as completely true and the poem in matter should be regarded as an attempt of parody of the specific textual content only and the method could be better labeled as anti-genre. Thus, the example of anti-qasida hereby disclosed could be seen not only as the author’s resistance to the dominant tradition in Ottoman poetry but also as his inclination to adhere to the Persian literary tradition where one could periodically come across similar poetic attempts.
