Summary/Abstract: The author writes about a subject that is both exciting and of great actuality and the way the author approaches the issue is provocative although analytical although it doesn't suggest concrete solutions. The paper was presented at the New Europe College in Bucharest in April 2002. The author starts by testing the capacity of the national and nationalism theories to explain the "national confusion" in the Republic of Moldova. The author also approaches and explains the possibility of opposite identity discourses (referring to the the Romanian identity discourse and the Moldavian one) in the frame of the same community, having the same more or less data: territory, ethicity, culture, language, history. The author talks about the general identity, "the invention" of the Moldavian people and the Moldavian language, the "institutionalization of the wrong identity", the national movement in Moldova.
