Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to assess the selected approaches to measuring innovation performance with direct application to the conditions of self-governing regions at NUTS III level in Slovakia. It deals with basic characteristics of the innovation performance of the existing system and its measurement. It summarizes existing approaches and transforms the conditions on regional governments in Slovakia. The first part is characterized by innovation and innovation performance and related issues. It addresses the apparent contradiction between innovation performance and the so-called invisible innovation performance, which is chartered by current systems of measurement. Based on theoretical assumptions and existing methodologies suggests the possibility to use the measurement of innovation performance in terms of self-governing regions at NUTS III level in Slovakia. Respecting the limitations of the data base and makes recommendations for the application of the proposed measurement system in the practical application of innovation policy at the regional level. Article shows that measuring innovation performance is an important means for implementing innovation policies, both at national and regional levels. Through the assessment of innovation performance and its individual dimensions can be assembled complex instruments suitable for the particular autonomous region. However, remains an open question whether all self-governing regions in Slovakia able to apply innovation policies relevant to their needs, just because of their current responsibilities and financial, human and technical resources.
