Summary/Abstract: The paper analyses the location of schools in the city, reconstructing the process by which the future construction site is chosen, and identifying the institutions involved in selecting the place. Financial, demographic and hygienic factors are directly involved in choosing the site for the school. The centre of the city was one of the areas preferred by authorities in locating the schools. Housing density, social structure of the school’s students and urban planning process explain the massive concentration of schools in the central areas of the cities. The outskirts are chosen by normal schools for teachers because they require large spaces for stables, workshops, crops. A problematic issue for the authorities proved to be the neighborhood. Schools should not be near just anyone and not every institution may operate near a school. The idea that the area around the school contributes to the success of educational act has determined a strict control over the issue. School regulations state clear prohibitions regarding institutions that could jeopardize in any way the moral order of the school.
