Summary/Abstract: The article refers to an essay titled Charles Lamb, written by Stanisław Brzozowski shortly before his death and coming up with the issue of ‘the uncanny’, which is of importance to our contemporary studies on modern literature. According to the author, what Brzozowski suggested in his article was a radical re-interpretation of his way of seeing the modern subject or ‘I’, forced to deal with an appalling experience of the uncanny haunting their world. Interpersonal ties are made subject to a toughest test; the modern community every once a while falls into a state of un-humanity and must thereafter be reconstructed once yet another catastrophe is over. In parallel, Brzozowski emphasises the importance of religious experiences to the modern individual (this being indicated by motifs of Ancient-Roman, Celtic, and Christian religion), who, thanks to them, has the ability to stay loyal to a modernity project.
