Summary/Abstract: In comparative researches, multiethnic states are often defined by subjective and arbitrary criteria. This is, on the one hand, a consequence of the controversies in interpretation of ethnicity as sociopolitical phenomenon, while, on the other hand, it is the result of the lack of empirical measures on states’ multi-ethnicity. In this paper I examine the question of quantitative measure of ethnic diversity that would provide an objective and empirical determination of multiethnic democracies as well as their comparison. Through elaboration I define ethnicity in the context of the state, ways of its empirical conceiving; I also calculate and present comparative data and measures of ethnic diversity, collected for all countries of the world.
