Summary/Abstract: The article deals with а semantically expressive range of preterit verb forms in T. Shevchenko’s poetic discourse. A potential spectrum of Ukrainian past tense grammemes as expression means of a complex nature and both implicitly and sometimes explicitly concentrating in an organic way in their semantics features of other parts of speech becomes particularly expressive in translation into Serbian, a cognate language. Unlike Ukrainian, it belongs to the South Slavonic branch and at present it demonstrates considerable differences from the East Slavonic preterit verb forms paradigm. Literary material testifies that the most frequently used device is morphological substitution of Ukrainian past tense grammemes by other, very often synthetic preterit forms, characteristic for the actual state of the Serbian language.
