Summary/Abstract: The aim of the study is to present selected aspects of the conceptualization of mind in English from the perspective of cognitive linguistics on the basis of linguistic data extracted from the British Na-tional Corpus (BNC). The study combines the theoretical framework of Conceptual Metaphor Theory and the methodological workbench of corpus linguistics. The introductory part of the study provides a review of various philosophical and psychological conceptions of mind which form a theoretical background for the analysis of the empirical data from English. The main part presents three selected ways of conceptualizing mind that were found in the analyzed corpus: MIND IS A CONTAINER (PLACE); MIND IS AN OBJECT THAT IS MANIPULATED; MIND IS A LIVING ORGANISM. The presence of these three conceptual metaphors of mind confirms previous theoretical propositions based on introspection from the perspective of empirical corpus analysis. Besides confirming previous theoretical propositions the results indicate that the corpus-based approach to conceptual metaphors is an efficient method of verifying theoretical intuitions.
