Summary/Abstract: The demise of Byzantium was a process that progressed slowly in the course of hundreds of years. It began in the middle of the 10th century and is considered as a result of the economic and military-strategic involution of the empire. In chronological terms, the decline is divided into three periods: the middle of the 10th century – 1204; 1261–1402; 1402–1453. The conquest of Constantinople of 1204 is discussed from the aspect of its positive effect: it put an end to the trends of partitioning of the empire with the establishment of powerful Greek state formations (Epirus and Nicaea). The dialectics in the empire’s foreign political collisions is underscored — a deadly danger hanging over Byzantium is frequently averted by another new and more powerful enemy. Such is the case of the Mongol incursions and the Seljuk Turks.
